With vegan, gluten-free, paleo and sugar-free diets now the social norm, it’s safe to say that finding the perfect wedding cake to suit all your friend’s and family’s tastebuds can be a potential minefield.
Thankfully, with the rise of dietary requirements, many cake and dessert specialists have taken up the challenge of creating beautiful, delicious and guilt-free cakes that cater to all needs.
Health coach and self-confessed sweet-tooth Sara Merckel, from SARAW, is one such baker. As a health coach with a history of autoimmune disease, Sara saw the need to help others suffering from similar afflictions and decided to create delicious treats that wouldn’t compromise people’s health and wellbeing.
Orginally creating treats for birthdays and corporate events, Sara says a growing number of brides and grooms are coming to her for wedding cakes and desserts.
“Brides and grooms are more conscious of their guests’ dietary needs these days,” Sara says. “My desserts really cater to those who follow specific diets for health reasons. Traditional wedding cake are filled with unhealthy sugars and ingredients, but people want desserts that are more nutritious and wholesome.”
Sara is not only passionate about sharing her knowledge and wisdom regarding health and wellness with others, but says creating cakes for weddings allows her the chance to bake exceptionally aesthetically beautiful creations.
“My love for making beautiful cakes made me really want to provide for weddings,” she says. “I can make exciting and stunning pieces that are really special, and I find being part of someone’s wedding a very rewarding thing.”
Not only creating Instagram-worthy cakes, Sara also offers brides and grooms the choice of desserts cups, bite-sized morsels, mousses and chocolates – all of which are, of course, vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free and paleo.
Sara said while some people initially had misgivings about the taste of her desserts, after one mouthful they had no complaints.
“The vegan thing can put people off at first I think,” she says. “People can be a bit daunted by the label and there are a lot of misconceptions about it, but they’re always surprised at how delicious they taste and always want more!”
With so many choices now available for brides and grooms regarding alternative cakes and desserts, you and all your vegan, gluten-free, paleo friends can have your cake and eat it, too!
